UH Hilo Administrative Affairs Commitments

Administrative Affairs supports the University in its mission as stated in the strategic plan:

"The primary mission of UH Hilo is to offer high quality undergraduate liberal arts and professional programs. Selected graduate degree programs are also offered where need warrants and the university has strong expertise. UH Hilo offers "hands-on" learning, service, and leadership opportunities and especially encourages close student-faculty interaction and collaboration on research projects. The university encourages theoretical and applied research, and benefits Hawai`i Island and the state through resource centers, community partnerships, continuing education, and distance learning programs."

Administrative Affairs includes a range of functions, such as:

  • Providing centralized financial, accounting, and purchasing services
  • Providing centralized human resources services
  • Caring for the physical environment, including campus buildings and grounds
  • Providing safety and security services
  • Providing facilities planning including new constructions and renovations
  • Providing institutional information for smooth and efficient operations
  • Providing mail and telephone services
  • Providing parking and transportation services
  • Maintaining a close working relationship with University of Hawaii system offices

Commitments

Provide stewardship of University resources

  • Use and develop resources wisely, economically and appropriately
  • Maintain, develop, and enhance our campus
  • Safeguard the University's physical assets
  • Protect the health and safety of faculty, staff, students and visitors
  • Develop the campus infrastructure systematically, efficiently, and wisely
  • Continuous seek out more efficient and economical ways to accomplish our responsibilities

Safeguard the University's human resources

  • Know, understand and implement the Campus Emergency Operations Plan
  • Provide quality and timely human resource services to all departments, employees and the general public with integrity, responsiveness and sensitivity

Enhance the fiscal operations of the University

  • Facilitate the procurement of goods and services in a timely manner
  • Provide financial transactions in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Provide controls to ensure business and financial integrity
  • Process payments of accounts receivable and accounts payable in a timely manner
  • Provide general oversight of the campus budget and allocations
  • Provide accurate and timely financial reports

Collect and analyze institution data

  • Maintain a research Web site that provides internal and external communities information about the university and its students
  • Provide planning and analytical support for decision-making.
  • Develop and conduct surveys.
  • Communicate results from institutional research to the University community and appropriate constituents.

Know, understand, and appropriately apply professional standards

  • Comply with all pertinent federal, state, and local laws and regulations
  • Ensure and facilitate compliance with University policies and procedures

Provide friendly, caring, and quality service

  • Treat all people with dignity and respect
  • Accept responsibility for the quality of our efforts
  • Represent the University in a positive and complimentary way at all times
  • When issues arise, seek fair and timely solutions
  • Provide appropriate support and professional guidance, and extend growth opportunities to all employees
  • Maintain integrity in data generation
  • Maintain confidentiality for appropriate faculty, student and staff information
  • Enhance communication among faculty, staff, students, and administration
